Turning Technologies solutions support student learning and are proven to enhance student success including retention of information, engagement, and increased motivation and attendance.

Before the Semester Begins


Check each class Syllabus to determine whether you need a clicker device or if you can use the ResponseWare application such as TurningPoint Cloud.

Using Turning Technologies clickers or TurningPoint Cloud can be accomplished by following the steps below:

  1. Read the Buying Guide. This includes important rebate info.
  2. If your class requires an actual clicker, purchase your device using the information in the section below, then create your Turning Account.
  3. If your class is using only the mobile device application, purchase a license from Turning Technologies. You must create or log into an account to access the online store.
  4. Register your device or license in Sakai. Learn how by watching this short video or read the section below.
  5. Start using it in the classroom!


IMPORTANT NOTE: Your device and/or license may be eligible for a rebate. This Buying Guide includes rebate information.

Buying a Turning Technologies Device (clicker)


Students may purchase a TurningTechnologies clicker device at the URI Bookstore or at the Turning Technologies online store.

The URI standard device is the QT model. If you already own an older model, check each course syllabus or ask your professor if the type of questions they will ask will require the QT model.

NOTE: For most new students, the least expensive plan is to purchase the current QT model with a 4 year license, to cover your undergraduate years, then pass it along to someone who can use it next. If you turn it in each May and purchase a new device each September you will spend more money.

  • University of Rhode Island Bookstore – Kingston
  • Turning Technologies Online Store (URI CODE: 4URI) – The online Student Store reflects the clicker models currently used at URI: QT clicker, and ResponseWare software.
  • [Two Student Rebate options are available.
  • If you already have a clicker, but need to purchase the Turning Account & ResponseWare license, there is a rebate for that entire cost, using your receipt from the online license purchase.
  • If you are a new user and purchase the QT clicker, it comes bundled with a 4 year Turning Account and ResponseWare license, and a rebate.

Sakai Tool for TurningPoint Cloud

Create a Turning Account


  • Log into Sakai and select the appropriate course.


  • Click the 'TurningPoint Cloud' link. (If needed, click Relaunch in a new window.)

  • The Turning Account website will open.




  • Enter your @my.uri.edu e-mail address and click 'Create Account.'

  • Check your e-mail and, when you receive the email from Turning Technologies, click the link to verify your Turning Account.

  • A new 'Create Account' page will open.
  • Enter your first and last name
  • Choose 'I am a Student' from the ROLE drop-down menu.
  • Enter any other required fields and click "Finish."

  • Another 'Create Account' page will open asking you to enter your license code or device ID.
  • If you have a license code and/or device ID, enter them in the appropriate box and click REDEEM and/or REGISTER.


IMPORTANT: You must have a license to participate and receive credit for your responses.


  • Click'Finish.'
  • The TurningAccount Dashboard will now open. If you have a check mark for License, Device and Learning Management System, you are finished.



Missing a License?


If you have an X below License on the Create Account License Registration page, it is because you have not yet applied a license to your account.

  1. Log into http://account.turningtechnologies.com
  2. Select 'Profiile' from the left menu
  3. Click 'Manage Licenses'
  4. Click Add a License
  5. Enter the code in the License Code field
  6. Click <Redeem</i>


To purchase a license from the Turning Technologies Student Store, click Student Storefrom the left menu. Then purchase your items.

Licenses are automatically applied to your Turning Account after purchasing.

Missing a Device ID?


If you have an X below Device, it is because you have not registered a device within your Turning Account.

  1. After purchasing your device from the University Bookstore, log into http://account.turningtechnologies.com to add your device.
  2. Select Profile from the left menu
  3. Click Manage Response Devices.
  4. Click Add a Device
  5. Enter the Response Device ID
  6. Click Redeem



Missing Learning Management System?


Log out of your Turning Account and navigate to [http:sakai.uri.edu Sakai] and select Turning Point Cloud from the left menu inside the appropriate course.

Student Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)


1. Is there a pdf with these directions?
Yes, a pdf of the TurningPoint Cloud instructions for students can be downloaded or opened on the web.

2. How do I change channels on a QT device?

  • Press the ‘CH’ button on your clicker.
  • Press the number of the channel so it shows in the box above ‘New Channel?’. (For channel 8, press 0, and then 8.)
  • Press ‘^’ under the OK in the bottom right screen corner.
  • The screen will read ‘Channel Changed.’

  1. The current channel shows in the top left screen corner.</i>
  2. Students may set the correct channel prior to entering class.


3. To change answers

Press the # or letter answer of your choice. You may answer multiple times. The session will only record your last clicker answer for each question.


4. How do I change the brightness and contrast?

Use the ‘wrench’ settings to adjust the screen brightness and contrast. For more information about specific clicker models TurningPoint has a webpage.


5. How do I use my iOS, Android device, or laptop to respond?

Turning Technologies offers ResponseWare, which allows you to poll with your iPhone, iPodTouch, Smartphone or laptop.


  1. Download the Turning Technologies ResponseWare application to your device.
  2. If a ResponseWare license activation code did not come bundled with your clicker, you must [ https://store.turningtechnologies.com purchase] a ResponseWare license. URI Code: 4URI.
  3. Finally, make sure your ResponseWare license shows up in the device list on your Turning Account.

7. What are the Accessibility options?

Turning Technologies maintains a webpage with accessibilty options.


8. Do I Really Need a TurningPoint License?"

A Turning Account license is mandatory for each participant/student.


If a participant/student does not purchase a Turning Account license, his or her score will show as an asterisk “*” in all TurningPoint Cloud participant reports.

Furthermore, his or her score will export as “0” to an Excel workbook and will not be exported to Sakai.

In other words, students cannot receive grades until they purchase and activate a license.


9. Do I Need More Than One Turning Account License If I Have More Than One Class Using Clickers?

No, purchasing a Turning Account license for a year covers you for all classes you take at URI that use Turning Technologies clickers during that year.


However, you will need to link your Turning Account to each additional Sakai course. To do this:

  • Log into Sakai
  • Select the course tabs for each class that is using TurningPoint Cloud
  • Click on the TurningPoint Cloud link in each course (in the left menu).
  • Click to relaunch the page in a new window as needed.
  • Sign into your Turning Account.
  • Log out.



10. What If I Lost the License Code That Came With My QT Clicker?

Please email support@turningtechnologies.com.
  • You will have to show a proof of purchase. Contact Turning Technologies by email or phone for options.

Using the Responseware Application on a Mobile Device


If your professor says you will be using Turning Technologies ResponseWare mobile polling in your class this semester, you will need to do the following prior to the first day of class:

3. Log in to Sakai

  • Follow the link in the left menu for TurningPoint Cloud to create a Turning Account
  • Purchase the license (if you have not already done so)
  • Enroll in the course
  • If applicable, update an existing ResponseWare account by changing your password.
  • The website for web-enabled connection is now responseware.turningtechnologies.com.
  • Please purchase the Turning Account license and create a Turning Account by the first Friday of class.</font>
