Slax is a LiveCD Linux distribution based on Slackware and is currently being developed by Tomáš Matějíček. Packages can be selected in official website where user can build custom Slax iso image. The latest version of Slax is 6.1.2, which was released on 4 August 2009. The default web browser for the current version of Slax is Firefox

Get Slax

To obtain a free copy of Slax, use their website (listed at the bottom of this page) to obtain the ISO file and burn it to an optical disk (CD or DVD). The Help Desk maintains a software database with the latest version of Slax. Users may bring a blank CD to the Help Desk to have the image burned.

Formatting

See Formatting for information on formatting media as NTFS. Users should consult the formatting guide before using Slax to back up data. It is recommended that NTFS drives are used to store data as they can be mounted in Windows for anti-virus scanning, can hold large files, and can be used on drives larger than 32GB.

Using Slax

Applications

  • System: The system application allows you to view storage media, such as hard drives, CD/DVD ROM drives, and flash drives. This application also shows the trash bin as well as the different user folders.

Mount an NTFS Drive

The following instructions are designed to allow users to mount an NTFS drive in read/write mode for backup purposes. Note that the primary drive will mount in read-only mode, which is appropriate for backing up data.

1. Boot into Slax (graphics/KDE mode) and then click the Terminal icon at the bottom left.
2. Use fdisk -l to see a list of drives. Identify the backup drive partition (i.e. /dev/sdb1).
3. Unmount the drive using the command, umount /dev/sdb1 and then enter,

 ntfs-3g -o force /dev/sdb1 /media/

4. Type umount /dev/sdb1 before physically removing the drive.

Saving User Data

1. Go to the System icon on the desktop. Navigate to Storage Media.
2. Locate the internal hard drive with files to be saved and the backup drive.
3. Copy and paste the files from the internal drive to the backup drive.

Changing Passwords

To change the root password in Slax open the terminal and type "passwd" . From there you can follow the instructions to change the password.
To change a user account password click on Control Center, select Security and Privacy, select Password and User Account, choose the User Account for which you with to change the password and click Change Password button.

Screen Saver, Display, Background

To change your background, screen saver, or display resolution right click on the desktop and select Configure Desktop. From there select the Background tab to change the background, the Screen Saver tab to change the screen saver, and the Display Tab to change the screen resolution

Power-Off Options

To shut down or restart the computer click on the K Menu and select Log Out. From there select Turn Off Computer to power down the machine or Restart Computer to restart the machine. Note that you will need to boot to the Slax CD again when the computer restarts.

IP Address

To find your IP address open the terminal and type ifconfig.

Master Boot Record

If the MBR is infected with malware and the user does not have a recovery partition, the following command may be used to wipe the entire drive and the boot record. Note that if the user does have a recovery partition, this command should not be used.

 dd if=/dev/zeros of=/dev/sdb bs=1024k

Broken Drives

During boot, Slax will automatically attempt to mount primary drives in read-only mode according to their partition table information (i.e. a drive that looks like NTFS will be mounted specifically as NTFS). However, drives whose partition table is corrupt may not work properly. In this case, the drive must be unmounted and then remounted without a format type (i.e. without specifying NTFS). The generic mount command is,

 sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/

Physical Damage

Drives that are physically damaged will most likely not mount and - barring forensic examination of the individual platters (HDD) or replacing the controller chip (SSD) - are unreadable.
