What is Respondus?


Respondus is a powerful program that allows the user to create and manage tests and quizzes that can be printed or used within Sakai. The user can print them, or publish them to Sakai. Respondus is a Windows-only application that is free for URI faculty and staff. URI Information Technology Services provides an annual site license for faculty use of Respondus.

Respondus has unique authoring features, including:

  • The ability to create exams and assessments offline using a Windows interface
  • 15 question types, including calculated and algorithmic formats
  • The ability to Import questions from Microsoft Word (including embedded images), rich-text, and tab/comma delimited formats
  • Access to thousands of Respondus-compatible publisher test banks – FREE to instructors who adopt a participating textbook



Preview, Publish and Printing Features


  • Preview questions before publishing them to the Sakai
  • Publish exams and assessments directly to an online course (media files are automatically uploaded)
  • Determine point values and exam settings offline
  • Print exams/surveys directly from Respondus, or save files to MS Word or rich-text format

System Requirements for Respondus

  • Operating System: Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista
  • Memory: 32 MB RAM minimum
  • Hard Disk Space: 10 MB of free hard disk space for program files
  • Monitor: 1024x768 or 1280x720 minimum resolution

Respondus works on Windows machines only. Also, because of the licensing agreement, Respondus must be reinstalled annually.

When you click on the link below, you will be prompted to log-in to Sakai where the download is located. Go to the site to download Respondus.
