Game consoles accessing the internet via a wired connection are not required to register with the network. All consoles are automatically registered with Safe Connect as plug-and-play devices. Wireless connections are not recommended; wireless support is provided on a best-effort basis. Please note that some devices, such as the Wii, may require users to browse to a webpage using the Wii Browser in order to authenticate with Safe Connect before playing MMORPGs.

Connections

For user protection, the university network is set to deny uninvited incoming traffic. Therefore, in some games, university-based players must make an outgoing connection before non-university-based players can join and interact in the game. However, many new games do not require this initial connection.

Supported Devices

All gaming devices must be connected through a wired connection on campus. Wireless connections cannot be used.

  • Nintendo Wii - To connect to the internet, the user must purchase a USB to Ethernet dongle. The user then must purchase an Ethernet cable and access the internet through a wired connection.
  • Sony PlayStation 3 - The user must purchase an Ethernet cable and access the internet through a wired connection. To connect to the internet, the user must open the web browser to be allowed through Safe*Connect.
  • Microsoft Xbox360 - The user must purchase an Ethernet cable and access the internet through a wired connection. To connect to the internet, the user must sign into XBox Live
  • Xbox One- The user must purchase an Ethernet cable and access the internet through a wired connection. They then must be open accessed through their wired MAC address, this can be done by calling the Help Desk.
  • PlayStation 4- The user then must purchase an Ethernet cable and access the internet through a wired connection. They then must be open accessed through their wired MAC address, this can be done by calling the Help Desk.

When in doubt, the user must generate web traffic (like a web browser) in order to be allowed through Safe*Connect.

Mobile Gaming Devices

Mobile Gaming Devices such as PlayStation Vita and Nintendo DS can be used on URI's wireless network, however, they may need to be open accessed first. This can be done by calling the Help Desk.
