The Messages tool is an internal course mail system for messaging between individuals and groups. Many instructors like to use the Sakai Messages tool exclusively since all messages and sent from, received by, and stored in the Sakai site. Messages can be sent to all site participants, or to participants by role, such all students, all members of a specific roster, all TAs and all instructors.

Key concepts

Viewing messages: Unread messages are in bold; viewed messages are marked as read, but you can mark any read message as unread. By default, messages are listed chronologically, but you can select the By Conversation view to display messages in indented threads.
Composing messages: A rich-text interface allows rich text, plain text, and HTML editing. See The rich-text editor. You can also add attachments.
Note: Pasting text into the rich-text editor should preserve most formatting, but some types of formatting, such as colored text, may need to be added manually in the editor after pasting.
Message priority: You can set priority levels for messages to distinguish important messages from others.

Things to consider

  • Using Messages, you can send messages to another individual, a select number of individuals, or a select number of groups.
  • Messages you send using the Send Cc option are sent directly to participants' email addresses; copies also appear in your Sent folder and the recipients' Received folders within Messages. Recipients must reply using Messages, not their email programs.

Automatic forwarding

Each participant can use the automatic forwarding feature to send an email message to an email address of his or her choosing upon receipt of each message in the Messages tool. To enable this feature:
  • In the menubar of the relevant site, choose Messages.
  • Click Settings, set "Auto Forward Messages" to Yes, and enter your preferred email address.
  • Click Save Settings.
