Open Area for Student Use
The Learning Commons are staffed by Technology Technicians for student convenience regarding media questions, printing assistance, and equipment use.

Internet Access

Ethernet

Each group project room has at least one active ethernet port for use with the internet.
Ethernet other AV cables can be acquired from the main Library Circulation Desk.
Please call Classroom Media Assistance at 874-4278 for any other concerns.


Wireless

If you have never used your laptop on the URI network, you will be asked to download and install an electronic policy key.
To authenticate with the policy site, you will need to use your URI eCampus username and your my.uri.edu password.

Print Station

URI Students and Faculty can print using their Ram Account. Other patrons can print using a Guest Pass from the kiosk available on main floor of the library near the entrance.

Black & White Printer

There are 2 black-and-white printers located across from the technology assistance desk. The black-and-white printer costs 10 cents per page. Patrons can also scan documents to their emails for 10 centers per page.

How to print:

  • After sending the document to the "URI Black and white server," select the "print release" icon on the touchscreen of the printer.
  • Once a message appears, swipe your URI I.D. on the right side of the printer.
  • A document should appear on the screen. Select "print."
  • If patron does not have a URI I.D., a guest pass can be purchased from the kiosk near the entrance of the library. If a patron has a URI I.D. and there are insufficient funds on their account, money can be added by using the Ram Account kiosk, located on the first floor of the library.

5 group study rooms with a LCD TV, VGA and HDMI inputs, ethernet, power outlets, and a whiteboard (rooms 171-175).
If you would like to use one of these rooms, go to the circulation desk and request a key for one of the rooms.

Projector

LCD Projector

The projector is located in the middle of the classroom on the ceiling.

Do not operate manually-- use the switcher located in the black Digital Media rack. (Directions below).

You do not need to turn the projector on. It will turn on automatically when you choose your input source (Video, VGA, HDMI, or BluRay).

  • The projector will automatically turn on when you touch the screen located in the black cabinet.
  • The warm-up cycle for the projector can take as much as 2 minutes to start up and 10 seconds for the light on the projector to start flashing after a source is selected.At the top of the screen it will show the remaining time the projector has to start.
  • Any attempt to turn off the system within the 2 minute Start-Up or Cool Down cycle may crash the system.
  • If needed again, the projector can be turned on after the 2 minute Cool-Down cycle.

Please turn the projector off when done (directions below).

Basic Troubleshooting for Group Study Rooms & Presentation Practice Room

Q: The Projector isn't showing what I want it to, it just has a blue screen, what do I do?

A: First, make sure that you are using the correct source. If you are trying the display from your laptop, you first have to touch the "VGA Laptop" icon on the screen. If you are trying to use a DVD, push the DVD/VCR button. After the correct source is selected, be sure to send the source to the projectors. If this step is not completed you may see your source on the podium, however that source is not projecting to the classroom. Second, if trying to display a laptop or document camera image, make sure that the VGA cable is securely fastened.

Also, when the projector does not work or there is shifting / overlap, look to see to what the device resolution has been set. If the resolution has not been set to 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz, reset it.

In Windows, right click on the desktop and select "Properties." Click on the "Settings" Tab, drag the Screen resolution to 1024 x 768, click "Apply." Then click on "Advanced." In the Advanced pane, click on the Monitor tab. Under "Monitor Settings," pull down the "Screen refresh rate" menu and select "60 Hz." Click "OK."

On the Mac, select "System Preferences" from the Apple pull-down menu in the upper left corner of the desktop. Select "Display" from the second line of icons. Select "1024 x 768' in the left column. Pull down the "Refresh rate" menu on the right of the preference pane and select "60 Hertz." Click on the red button in the upper left of the open preference pane.

Q: I don't have sound! Help!

A: Don't panic! Is the Program Volume set to "Mute"? Try pressing the mute button and see if the sound comes back. Maybe the sound volume itself isn't high enough. Try turning up the volume using the steps outlines in Audio Adjustment above. Also, make sure that the media source that you are using sound from is that last source that was selected and sent to the projectors.


Q: My DVD isn't working, how can I get it to play? Help!

A: Make sure that you are using the correct format in the correct player. A Blu Ray DVD will NOT work in a normal DVD player, you have to use the Blu Ray Player. HD DVDs are NOT the same as Blu Ray. They will NOT work in either the Blu Ray player or the regular DVD Player. Otherwise, try cleaning your DVD with a paper towel by making slow circular motions from the center of the DVD outwards. Try playing your DVD again. If that still isn't working, perhaps you aren't on the correct setting. Make sure you have pressed the "DVD" or "BLU RAY" icon on the touch screen.
