Electronic Access

Important Notes: Card Activation

This room is equipped with electronic access (a card-swipe lock). The electronic mechanism locks and unlocks with a swipe of an authorized URI ID card.

To unlock the door, swipe the ID card with the magnetic strip inside the sliding mechanism, and your picture facing to the left as shown in the picture at the right. To lock the door, repeat this process.

  • A steady green light indicates the door is unlocked.
  • A red light indicates the door is locked.

Faculty assigned to teach in classrooms with electronic access should be automatically entered prior to the start of the semester, or 24 hours before a special event. To be safe, be sure to test your card at least 1 business day prior to your first class meeting.

There are three sets of light switches. One is on the right near the auditorium door, one is near the podium and one is near the back door that exits to the ramp.

Internet Access

Ethernet

Wired Connection

Each room has at least one active ethernet port for use with the internet.
There should be an ethernet cable in the rack drawer to use with the port.
If you find one is missing, please call Classroom Media Assistance at 874-4278.

Wireless Access

If you are unable to get online using the wired port, or if you prefer, all rooms also have wireless internet access.
If you have not used wireless access in the past, please be sure to test out your laptop before class starts.
Some manufacturers have special programs or settings that control wireless, or your machine may have a physical button that needs to be selected.

If you have never used your laptop on the URI network, you will be asked to download and install and electronic policy key. You probably don't want to do this during class time as it can be time consuming, so connect your laptop in your office first and get this step out of the way.

To authenticate with the policy site:
- Use your URI eCampus username
- With your Sakai/wireless password.

If you don't remember this password, please call the URI Help Desk at 401-874-4357.

To move the screen down, use the "Down" button.

To move screen up, use the "Up" button, and it will automatically rise.
The center "Stop" button is to stop the movement of the screen, otherwise it is fully automated to extend or retract.
Please put the screen up at the end of class.

PLEASE NOTE: If the screen does not respond to the buttons, please call Classroom Media Assistance 874-4278 for assistance.

There is a projector mounted in the center of the ceiling.

Do not operate manually-- use the switcher located in the podium.(Directions below).

You do not need to turn the projector on. It will turn on automatically when you choose your input source (Video, VGA, HDMI, or BluRay)

Please turn the projector off when done (directions below).

Installed Media

A single podium with the media installed is located in the room in front of the stage. The media is always open so there is no need for a key to access the system for classroom use.

To access this equipment, faculty please request a training from Classroom Media Assistance in the Library (LL4).

This media system includes, in order from top to bottom:

  • a transmitter for the Assisted Listening System (top left of rack)
  • a receiver for the Assisted Listening System (second item in the rack, just below the transmitter)
  • a touchscreen control panel
  • a BluRay (DVD) player
  • external video and computer source cables (VGA, HDMI, video)

Inputs Available

Video equipment (e.g., cameras or VCRs) or computers can be used as sources with this equipment rack. These devices would plug into the row of input jacks located on a panel in the lower half of the rack (shown above).

In order from left to right, these jacks are:

  • VGA - installed in the podium: for a laptop either directly connecting through the VGA cable or using an adapter, such as an Apple MiniDisplayPort to VGA. A VGA cable is included in the drawer. If needed, adapters can be reserved and checked out through CMA.
  • HDMI - installed in the podium: for either a laptop or a video camera with a HDMI ports. An HDMI cable is included in the drawer.
  • Component video - unavailable through CMA separately: the color-coded jacks (red, white,yellow) are for a video source. The red and white are for audio (stereo) and the yellow is for video.

Top Row: Source selections for Laptop Functions, Document Camera, Blu-Ray DVD, Room PC, and Air Media.

Left side: Program volume controls the volume of the overall system while microphone volume controls the volume of the microphone attached to the podium.

Right Side: The time can be found in the top right corner of the screen.

Bottom: The power button can be found on the bottom left of the screen.


PROJECTOR NOTES: When powering off the system, select the red power off button on the bottom left of the screen. A second screen will show and ask you to confirm if you want to power down the system.

Document Camera

The Document Camera is easily controlled through the TouchScreen Control Panel. To operate, simply pull the head upward and power on manually on the top left of the bed. Then select the source from the Control Panel to maneuver the image projected. When done with use, simply turn off the Doc Cam manually and pull the circle tab in the middle of the stand to fold up the camera.

Portables & Wireless

Assisted Listening System (ALS) Transmitter Microphone

Assisted Listening Wireless (Lav) Microphone



One wireless microphone and four ALS Listen units are stored above the BluRay player so they will not get tangled with the cables in the drawer. If used, please wrap the wires around them and return them to this location.


The microphone receiver in the media rack is configured to route the audio signal through the ALS system only. The microphone does not feed the speaker system in the room, this is an Assisted Listening Device only.


Please do not adjust any of the settings on the ALS transmitter or receiver, these have been preset at optimal levels by our tech staff.

ALS Receiver Units

There are ALS Listen wireless receivers are stored above the BluRay player in the media rack.

These units are for use by students who need hearing assistance.

The Listen units will not work unless the microphone unit is turned on.

Extra batteries for these units are stored in the drawer. If all the batteries have been used, please call Classroom Media Assistance, 874-4278.



To use the Assisted Listening System (ALS) , the instructor must wear the wireless microphone and the hearing-impaired student must use the Listen unit. See directions below for further information.

The ALS devices are stored on top of the BluRay player so they will not get confused with the wireless microphones stored in the drawers.

Directions

Connecting a Laptop

A laptop shelf is located above the drawer near the bottom of the equipment rack, just pull the shelf out towards you to use.

1. Connect the VGA or HDMI cable to the laptop.
2. The VGA cable also includes an audio component, connect this to the laptop if needed. HDMI signal includes audio, so a separate audio cable is unnecessary.
4. Turn the laptop on.
5. Select source VGA or HDMI on the switcher. (This also turns on the system.) The startup screen should appear on the laptop and the projector screen after several seconds.

Notes:

  • If the projector is on and the computer itself is not, you may see either a black screen (HDMI) or blue screen (VGA).
  • If an adapter is needed (e.g., DVI to VGA or Mini-DisplayPort to VGA or HDMI), you can purchase one from Ram Computers in the Memorial Union.
  • If an image does not appear when the Windows laptop is connected, try using the function key for display selection (e.g., Fn + F4 or F8).
  • If an image does not appear when using a Mac, go to System Preferences (under the Apple Menu in the upper left), select the Displays preference pane, and click "Detect Displays." Select the Arrangement tab, choose to either mirror the display or extend the desktop to the projector.


Monitor Resolutions: An appropriate monitor resolution should be automatically selected. However, if you want to change your settings, CMA recommends:

  • If a 4:3 aspect ratio is preferred, use 1024 x 768 with a refresh rate of 60 Hz as your display settings.
  • If a 16:10 aspect ratio is preferred, use 1280 x 800 as your display settings.



Classroom Media Assistance has a limited number of wireless mice and keyboards that can be used on the podium while the computer is on the shelf. These can be checked out for the entire semester. Please visit Classroom Media Assistance on the lower level of the Library (LL4) to reserve one.

If there is no image, be sure to check whether video output is active (e.g. Function + F8, or similar command)

Using the BluRay (DVD) Player

To turn the BluRay Player on or off, press the power button located on the bottom edge of the left side of the player. (This button is very small.)

To insert a disk, use the open tray button on the middle bottom edge of the player and use this button to close the disk tray. To eject the disk, use the same button.

All of the controls for the BlurRay DVD player are located in the Touch Screen Control Panel.
To change the volume, use the Program Volume located on the right side of the TouchScreen Control Panel.

Using the Assisted Listening System

Assisted Listening Wireless (Lav) Microphone

Attach the microphone to the instructor's lapel or collar. Extra batteries are stored in the drawer.

If the microphone unit is not turned on, the system will automatically be in MUTE mode.

To turn on the microphone, open the lower half of the case front and press the ON/OFF button for 2 seconds. If you do not press for the 2 seconds, just ignore the MUTE ON or MUTE OFF prompt and the system will still be on.

If you want to mute the system, there are two methods. First, there is a mute button located on the top part of the microphone unit--this mutes just the microphone.

Second, you can mute the entire system. Open the lower half of the front case, press on/off. Respond to the MUTE ON prompt by clicking the Set button on the right of the case front. The system will now be muted. Conversely, to turn the Mute function off, open the case and click on/off button, then click Set.

Remember: Turn OFF the Microphone when done by pressing the On/Off button for 2 seconds. Return to drawer when finished.

Using the "ALS" Listen Units

Listen Wireless Receiver


These wireless Listen units are stored above the BluRay player in the media rack.

Check that the Listen unit has batteries. Extra batteries are located in the rack drawer.

Turn the Listen unit on by dialing the volume wheel away from Off to the appropriate volume.

To turn the unit off, dial the wheel all the way back to Off.

You do not need to adjust any setting on the ALS receiver or transmitter in the media rack.

Please remember to turn OFF the Listen devices when done, coil the ear piece around the unit and return it to above the BluRay player.


Troubleshooting

COMMON EXAMPLES:
1. NO SOUND
-make sure all auxiliary cables are plugged in and secure.
-restart the equipment you are trying to have sound played from.
2. NO PICTURE
-make sure all VGA and video cables are plugged in and secure.
-On a Laptop: Press CTRL + F8
-restart the equipment you are trying to have sound played from.

Locking Up

Please Remember to:

  1. On the Switcher, press the "Power Display OFF" button to turn Off the projector.
  2. Remove your media and Power Off the media machine used. Power Off your laptop.
  3. Turn the classroom Lights OFF. Shut all Exterior Doors.
  4. Swipe-lock the main door using your URI ID card. The card-reader light will blink green when in locked mode.

Security

Ask students waiting for the next class to remain outside the classroom until their instructor arrives.
As the Instructor, you are responsible for the room's security during your class time, so please lock up!
