You can get software updates for OS X and apps from the Mac App Store. In Mountain Lion and Mavericks, use Mac App Store for OS X Updates.

How to Setup Automatic Updates

  1. At the top left, click the Apple logo.
  2. Select "System Preferences" from the menu.
  3. In System Preferences, select the "App Store" icon (fourth row).
  4. Be sure to check off "Automatically Check for updates" and then check what components you would like to be updated.


How to Update your Software Manually

  1. Choose Apple logo on the top left.
  2. Select Software Update, if prompted enter your admin name/password.
  3. The App Store opens and displays any software and application updates that are available

NOTE: Opening the App Store by clicking its Dock icon will only show Mac App Store app updates.

4. Click Update all on the top right corner, if prompted enter you admin name/password then your Apple ID and password.
